05 - From Eager to Chill Beaver
Dear Internet Diary,
In my last B.LOG post, I shared my revelations of being an eager beaver. Realizing that I was potentially alienating beavers from connecting with humans helped me consider creative alternatives for fostering relationships.
What this looked like at first was creating hand-made signs.
“Hi There!” “I’m a beaver, what are you?” “This is The Lodge.” “Would you like a complimentary stick?”
These are some of the signs that I created. Rather than thrusting myself upon humans or over-explaining myself when people stopped by to inquire about The Lodge, I would now sit still in The Lodge. I started lighting incenses and playing music over a small speaker that a human graciously lent me.
Ensuring that the vibes at The Lodge were warm and welcoming, people started showing more interest and engaged on their own volition.
Holding my signs and changing them based on people’s questions and interests allowed for people to have more agency and develop their own curiosity outside of my own beaver desires.
The entire point of bridging the human-beaver divide through The Lodge is to create a space for humans to practice developing their own sense of agency, choice, curiosity, and playfulness. These are qualities that can be encouraged but they cannot be forced. Force would generate more divide and strip away the chance for empowered self-development.
It has been a fascinating, informative, and fruitful experience to notice how humans were responding to my previous eager beaverness to my current chill beaver ways. The beaver message, goal, and hopeful outcomes are still the same. It is the means of arriving there that have shifted.
I imagine that these means may shift, adapt, and evolve as The Lodge continues its operation.
For now, I will continue experimenting, observing, and documenting my findings.
I may not have expressed this in my previous logs, so I will share it here now and reiterate myself in the future - these logs are meant to be collaborative. Should you find yourself reading any of these beaver insights and get inspired, or notice comments bubbling up that you would like to share, I would love to hear them. After all, I am simply a humble beaver trying to learn the ways of humans to better connect and bring the joys of beaverhood into the wider populace.
Like most sentient beings, I am constantly evolving, learning, growing, and open to hearing suggestions, requests, concerns, and comments on how to be my best beave. Becoming my best beave self is important for myself, for all beavers, and for the goal of connection. As a keystone species, beavers are crucial ecosystem engineers. That ecosystem is incomplete without human involvement. We need one another if we want to see thriving natural environments. Such thriving will ensure that humans can continue with their own innovative habitat designs.
